Major Questions to Ponder

To start the class, you have five questions posted around the lab. They are to write their group response in a particular marker color. Then, the class will review the responses.

• Some animals are social, like bees, ants, termites, and people. What are the benefits of living in a social group?

• Some animals are social, like bees, ants, termites, and people. What are the drawbacks of living in a social group?

• What has a greater impact on animal behavior? Genetics? Learning/Environment/Mimicry?  Why do you think?

• Altruistic behavior is the unselfish concern for other’s well-being, acting to help others with no expectation of reward or personal gain. What about natural selection and evolution makes this rare among mammals?

• Altruistic behavior is the unselfish concern for other’s well-being, acting to help others with no expectation of reward or personal gain. Other than people, what animals might show this behavior?

• What about organism fitness relies on animal communication? What type of signals can be used for fitness in the environment?
