2.2 Cell Size (day 2)

Today's Learning Objective(s):

Explain the effect of surface area-to-volume ratios on the exchange of materials between cells or organisms and the environment

Tasks:

1

Pre-Lab

Read about the phenomenon that cells are small (page 1). Then, answer the questions on page 2 with your lab mates.

2

Conduct the lab

Follow directions on pages 3-4 to item #4. The cubes need to soak in NaOH for 10 minutes.

CAUTION: NAOH is a strong base. It is corrosive. It can cause chemical burns and damage eyes. Wear goggles, gloves and take precautionary actions.

2.2 Cell Size

Today's Learning Objective(s):

Explain the effect of surface area-to-volume ratios on the exchange of materials between cells or organisms and the environment

Tasks:

1

Plastic Cylinders filled with Cubes

We have two cylinders. How do they compare?

AP BIOLOGY FORMULA SHEET

2

View and Compare Cells

Go through the simulation.

 Cell Size Simulator

Test Your Knowledge

You are to answer, “How does cell size impact particles within the cell?”

3

Cells from Their Perspective

You are to use the interactive to show the changes in magnitude.

Think about world of the cell and size of particles.

How do cells compare to other particles around them. Can you think of an analogy as a model?

4

Teacher Notes > Cell Size

Let’s go over the main components of examining cell size.

5

Comparing Surface Area to Volume

Get some manipulatives.

Open the Google Sheet.

Create some different sized cells as rectangles.  Then, let’s see what the results of SA, V, and SA:V.

6

Cell Size is Limited by Surface Area (worksheet)

Get a copy of the worksheet. Complete it. It is homework if not completed in class.
